Email Migration - POP - using APPLE MAIL (with name servers pointed to registrar)

POP3 - MAC Mail migration



1.  Open your Mac Mail client and backup your emails:

Select one or more mailboxes by holding the command key (apple key) pressed, then choose Mailbox and select Export Mailbox.

Choose an existing empty folder or create a new folder, then click Choose.

Mac Mail exports the mailboxes as .mbox packages. If you previously exported a mailbox, Mac Mail doesn’t overwrite the existing .mbox file; it creates a new .mbox file.



2.  Go to your registrar page and log in to your control panel.

 Once you log in to your domain registrar control panel, delete the old MX records and add the new ones provided by your new email hosting company




  • hosting company is the company that has the files for your website stored on their servers (liveBooks)
  • domain registrar is a company that reserves and registers your ".com, .net, .org" domain name (GoDaddy, Network Solutions, 1&1, etc.)
  • A-record determines which IP address belongs to a domain name
  • Cname record lets you assign a domain or sub-domain to another address or hostname.
  • MX record is responsible for accepting incoming email and routing it to a specified mail server


3.  Create your new email accounts (same email addresses) on your new email hosting control panel. Log in to your new webmail account and recreate the same folder structure.


4.  Get the new email account’s Mac Mail settings from your registrar.


5.  Return to your Mac Mail app and remove the existing liveBooks email accounts ONLY if you completed step 1 - email backup. If not, please follow the instructions and complete step 1.


Go to Mail and click Email accounts. Select the account that you want to remove and press the “-” sign on the bottom left page.



This way your liveBooks email account will be removed from Mac Mail.


6.  Add the new email accounts on your Mac Mail using the new email settings provided by your email hosting company.


In order to import all your old emails to your new account please configure Mac Mail using IMAP.


Choose "Add Other Mail Account." Then click “Continue”.




7.  You will be asked for your name, full email address, and email password. Fill in this information, then click “Create”.




8. Enter your new Incoming Mail Server details provided by your new email hosting company and press “Next”:


Account Type: IMAP

Mail server: IMAP server

User name: your full email address

Password: your new email password


If asked, please enter the port number used by the incoming mail server. Common port numbers for incoming mail are 143 and 993 for IMAP accounts.


9. Enter your new Outgoing Mail Server details and press “Next”:


Mail Server: SMTP server

User name: your full email address

Password: your new email password


If asked, please enter the port number used by the outgoing mail server. Common port numbers for outgoing mail are 25, 2525, 465, and 587.


Return to the main page. Right click on your “Inbox” and select ”Get Account Info”. Go to “Subscription list”, select all folders and press “Subscribe”.


Your new email account is now configured on your Mac. For multiple email accounts please repeat the above steps.




10.  Once your new email accounts are set up, it is time to import your emails to your new account.


Go to “File” and press “Import Mailboxes”. Select first option “Apple Mail” and press “Continue”. Select all previously exported mailboxes and press “Choose”.



11.  The messages will show in a new mailbox called “Import” in the Mail sidebar.


At this point you can drag / copy messages from the “Import” mailbox to your new mailboxes, then delete the Import mailbox.





Congratulations! The process is now finished. Please make sure all emails are in place and you can send / receive emails with your new account.


All emails will be uploaded on the new server. Multiple devices can be configured to access your email address in the same time using IMAP protocol.
